Software Africa Newsletter - June 2016

Editorial

After my statement that sales can happen even in hard times, we realised a self-fulfilling statement and have had an excellent month. Tonight I give a presentation on selling and am looking forward to the feedback!  The cold weather is firmly around with really cold nights and mornings.  Nothing beats Bloemfontein for really experiencing the cold though as I found out last week!

Sales Position

We still have an opening for a salesperson to sell QuickBooks and Autodesk products.  Come and work in an office which uses Cloud telephony solutions!  In addition, you get to use QuickBooks in your daily tasks and pass the Autodesk exams online.  Please send CVs to Judith.

PC Tip: "Windows 10 Upgrade" Email Scam Installs Ransomware

Windows 10 is a free upgrade for anyone with a licensed copy of Windows 7, 8. or 8.1 installed on their PC. However, users need to be aware of a new email scam that is claiming to offer the Windows 10 upgrade, but instead installs a ransomware program.

The email claims to have an installer attachment that will give PC owners the Windows 10 upgrade. The email's text has a number of odd characters, hinting that it is not from Microsoft. If the attachment is clicked and the program installed, the user will not get the Windows 10 upgrade, but rather ransomware. The program then displays a message informing the user that all PC files have been encrypted and will remain encrypted unless the user pays the ransom.

Microsoft is definitely not sending out emails with program attachments to get people to upgrade to Windows 10. It has its own "Get Windows 10" app that the company is automatically installing on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PCs, which performs the upgrade. Alternatively the user can perform a clean install via ISO files.

If you see any email claiming to be from Microsoft with any kind of program attachment, it is a scam and should be deleted. Thanks to Cisco and DBS Technology for this tip.

QuickBooks - 2016

QuickBooks 2016 comes in three flavours - Pro, Premier and Premier Accountant.  QuickBooks have rationalised their pricing and now only support the 2015 versions as well as 2016.  We advise people to upgrade to 2016, not only because it works better than 2015, but because the cost is the same.

If you run QuickBooks on a server, as we do, please make sure that the server is running the Database Manager.  Otherwise, you will have problems accessing multi-user mode.

Look at www.imaginedearth.com to find a great recycling solution.  It benefits the recyclers by giving them points or vouchers for coffee and other things

Autodesk updates

Please note that from 1st February 2016, all maintenance subscriptions must be renewed promptly!

The Subscription Options

From the 1st February, only subscription offerings are available.  These are as follows:

AutoCAD LT subscriptions only come with Advanced Support!

Ironically, I discovered that some of the Design Suites are still available on permanent licence plus maintenance subscription.  If this is a direction you want to take - do it now!

You can pause your subscription if you do not want to renew at the end of the period. The downside is that you actually have to purchase a brand new subscription.

Revit Offerings

Autodesk Revit has been released as a standalone product once more. It incorporates Architecture, MEP and Structure, plus A360 cloud rendering.  The latter frees up the designer's machine for other work as well as operating much faster.  It is available on Annual and Quarterly subscriptions.

Inventor Changes

Autodesk Inventor Pro is now available outside of the Suites, whilst straight Inventor is not.  Pro comes in at the same pricing (approximately) as AutoCAD, which makes it a great investment as you can stress test your designs with Pro.

Excel Tip #144 -  Pin a Recent File or Folder

In Excel, when you click the File menu and then the tab Recent, Excel gives you a list of recently-used files and folders.  This is very useful and saves having to use File > Open to find a file you used recently.  However, sometimes you have an Excel file that you use regularly, for example every month, but by the time you come to use it again, it has disappeared off the list.

To prevent this and keep a file permanently on the Recent list, notice that on the right of the file name is a small picture of a "pin", circled in the picture below.  Click it, and that file will remain "pinned" in the top section of the list.  Easy!  Notice how the "pin on its side" symbol changes to a "pin in use".

The list of Recent Places (folders) has a similar function.  If there are too many files that you want to use often, or the file name changes regularly, consider pinning the folder instead.
