Editorial

Sad news: Thuli is leaving us after two years as her baby is constantly sick and is taking up most of her time.  It is a painful decision from both sides and we will miss her very much.  If your company has a receptionist's position closer to Meadowlands, she may be able to fill it once the baby is well.

Last month was close-out on Autodesk's first Quarter and we must thank everyone who contributed to our sales reaching target!  We are challenged by an even higher target for this quarter, so we'll be working harder to please you and meet your requirements.

We are becoming quite a team and want to build on this during the year.  Our year-end is 30 June and we are already reaching new highs with our sales!  Again, thank you to all our loyal customers.

Autodesk Updates

The launch of the 2014 software range was done at Hyatt Regency on the 9 and 10 May.  An emphasis was placed on the benefits of the annual subscription and how subscribing can greatly enhance your access to additional software in the Cloud.

Autodesk Subscription Benefits

These give real value to your Autodesk product users.  They include the following:

Upgrade your Autodesk Products to Suites - Special until 18th July

Any current or less than seven-year-old Autodesk product can be upgraded to a Design Suite appropriate to your workflow.  This at a 20% discount on the price.  It is particularly cost-effective if you are utilising 3 or more Autodesk products.  However, the benefits may far outweigh even that as greater productivity comes with your investment in a suite.  To see a really effective use of Building Design Suite go to https://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=16894457 and read about the Shanghai Towers.  This building will be one of the tallest in the world on its completion and the design was optimized and tested using the full range of the suite's capabilities as well as Autodesk 360.

Please contact Judith info@softwareafrica.co.za or Willy willy@softwareafrica.co.za for more information and a quotation.

QuickBooks Updates

QuickBooks is really simple to install and use.  It is also very stable, which means that you can easily check your data's integrity and trust it completely.  Whilst we seldom recommend Simple Start, it does have its uses.  Pro is the most effective entry level solution.

Most asked Question

Where do I find the licence number and the key when installing QuickBooks?  You'll find it on the back of your CD!

In addition to selling you your QuickBooks or Quick Payroll, we also offer installation and telephone support.  Depending on where you are situated, the cost of installation is low but travel may add to it.

Currently we have four QuickBooks Pro 2013 left at the special price of R2500 inc VAT and delivery.

For more information, phone the team on 011 802-2685 / 6440.

dotPLOT and HotPlot

dot7013 was released on 7 May 2013 with HotPlot 3.13.1.  Reduced Levels below Sea Level now show negative (or if you ask for Reduced Levels but leave out the hole elevation).

In HotPlot, we added a whole new tab, Logo Transform to the SET File Editor. This tab allows you to greatly reshape how your logo appears, rotating, applying skew, shifting, and scaling it as required.

Green Tip

Are you living by a river and affected by squatters?  We know that this is a major problem.  If you are in Joburg, City Parks is of little assistance as are the SAPS and JMPD.  You can negotiate with City Parks to take stewardship of your river.  This means that you have the authority to maintain the river banks.  By forming work parties, you can clean the area and this then pushes the squatters away.  A second initiative is to press for more homeless shelters to be erected, as these people have nowhere to go.

Excel Tip #112 - The Data tab (V): Data Tools - Remove Duplicates

We continue looking at the "Data" tab on Excel 2010's Ribbon, in the "Data Tools" group.  After "Text to Columns", which we looked at last time, comes "Remove Duplicates".  This function is very simple.  Once you have data in separate columns, possibly with a single row of headings, you can use "Remove Duplicates" to delete the rows that have duplicates in a column, or columns, that you specify.

  1. Start by clicking anywhere in the data.
  2. On the "Data" tab on the Ribbon, use "Remove Duplicates" button. The block of data will be selected and a dialog box appears.
  3. All columns are ticked.  It may be easiest to us use the "Unselect All" button first, then tick the columns that contain duplicates.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Excel tells you how many rows it deleted and how many remain.  Only rows within the selected block are deleted; selected cells below are moved up.  Unselected cells (underneath and next to the selected block) are not affected.

There is plenty to look at in "Data Validation", so we will look at this one of the "Data Tools" next time.
