So the birds are back with their dawn chorus and very soon the jasmine will be in flower.  There is new growth showing everywhere.  Is it showing in your business? Are you ready to power up for Spring again, come out of your shell and make an impact?  Even during tough times, creativity can turn around your results.  We are thinking about changing our logo.  It's bringing much debate up and it also means looking at changing our website.  Perhaps being more idea driven and more pictures - less text.  If you want to make suggestions - please do!.

Computer Tip: "How do you know when to single-click or double-click?"

When I am asked, I answer scientifically, "If a single-click doesn't work, then double-click". With practice, you will learn when a double-click is necessary. Following are a few of those occasions:

Any Windows window on your screen:
* Double-click the blue title bar to Maximize or Resize the window (better than pointing at the tiny Maximize box on the right).

MS Word:
* Double-click any word to highlight the whole word (easier than a click & drag).
* Triple-click within a paragraph to highlight the entire paragraph. (MUCH easier than a click & drag).
* Double-click the left ruler to quickly open "Page Setup".
* Double-click into the top margin to access the "Header" section to insert a Title or Page Number.  The document text will turn gray.  Then Double-click back into the gray document text when done.

MS Excel:
* Double-click the Sheet tab at the bottom of the screen to re-name the tab.
* Double-click the fill handle of a cell to copy the contents down as far as there are adjacent cells with content (will not work if adjacent cells are blank).

QuickBooks Tip: Problems with Export to Excel

Even with QuickBooks 2015, there is still a bug relating to exporting certain number formats.  When you Export to Excel, you may find that totals appear as zeros with strange punctuation, and numbers are right-aligned.  Numbers are actually text, giving zero totals, or #VALUE# for other formulas.

This may be because your settings in Excel differ from those in QuickBooks, or your Windows Regional settings are ones that do not work with QuickBooks.

Firstly, make sure that Excel is not displaying numbers with separators for thousands or decimals different to those set for Windows.  In Excel, click the File menu (Microsoft Office Button prior to 2010), and then click (Excel) Options near the bottom. On the Advanced tab, near the bottom of Editing options, select the check box Use system separators.

Then, click the Windows Start button, and choose Control Panel > Region and Language (Regional settings).  On the first tab, select Format: English (United Kingdom), and Apply.  Having English (South Africa) here causes the problem: It sets a space as the thousands separator, which causes the QuickBooks Export indigestion since it seems to prefer a comma.  It does not seem to cause QuickBooks any other problems, so if you prefer a space for thousands, and do not export to Excel, do not worry.  Having made the change, click the button Additional Settings and fix the currency.

When you Apply or OK the Regional settings, Excel should pick them up immediately. Parts of QuickBooks may not, so it best to re-start it.

Green Tip

Not a tip this month, rather an urgent request to be alert about sewer and water leaks.  The amounts of sewage being decanted into our rivers is beyond a joke.  Lack of infrastructure maintenance over the years has resulted in many and increasing breakdowns.  If our children and grandchildren are to have access to clean water as stated in the Constitution, it is up to each one of us to take action!  Report all leaks to our local authority (Joburg Water if you live in this Third-World Class African City).

Retiring of Permanent Licences

Autodesk is transitioning from perpetual software licenses to subscription-based options. After 31 January 2016, new seats of most individual Autodesk software products will be available only on a pay-as-you-go Desktop Subscription basis. Sales of new perpetual licenses for these products will be discontinued. This change applies to both standalone and network licenses.

You will, however, be able to continue using your existing perpetual licenses. For your software that is on Maintenance Subscription, you will receive ongoing updates and retain access to your benefits by keeping your Maintenance Subscription current.

Excel Tip #136 - The Developer tab (IV): Add-Ins, the Solver Add-in (Recap)

Last time, on the Developer tab, we looked at the Add-Ins group at the middle left.  In the Add-ins, we listed various add-ins and highlighted the Solver Add-in, a wonderful tool for optimisation and solving equations.  We said that we would look at it this time.
