Software Africa Newsletter - January 2017

Editorial

All the very best for 2017 as we come back from our holidays and look hard into the future. The rains have returned and we were amused to hear, from a news reader this morning, that "after heavy flooding in Heidelberg, we must prepare for storms in Gauteng".  We're very grateful to Heidelberg for doing this.

Unfortunately the Rand has not yet strengthened to bring Autodesk pricing down and government actions over the next few weeks will either help or hinder it.

QuickBooks 2017 Features

Here are some of the new features:

Online Business Tip #3 - Google International Time

Doing business internationally? In the Google Chrome browser, or on www.google.co.za, or in Firefox with Google as default search engine, you can easily get the current time elsewhere in the world.  For example, enter "time in new york", and Google will give you a handy display:

Quick Payroll

We look forward to having you as a Quick Payroll Key Player user and we will do our utmost to make the transition from the old Quick Payroll, as painless as possible. Please contact renewals@quickbooks.co.za for assistance with this.

Please contact Judith for the new KeyPlayer software and assistance in getting your data file to QuickBooks for conversion.

Green Tip

The water situation is still a problem and restrictions are still in place.  Please take care with your water usage, as the fines are very high and pricing goes up based on how much you use.

The Subscription Options for Autodesk Products

These are as follows:

AutoCAD LT subscriptions only come with Advanced Support!

If you have bought perpetual Suites on a maintenance plan - that's good too! You can continue to renew the maintenance plan for your Suite as long as
you want.

You can pause your Collection subscription if you do not want to renew at the end of the period. The downside is that you actually have to purchase a brand new subscription. This requires downloading the new software again.

AutoCAD Tip - Introduction to Autodesk Vehicle Tracking in Autodesk Civil 3D

We're bored with Excel 2016, which has few if any advantages over earlier versions, and several drawbacks, so here is an AutoCAD tip instead.

In order to keep our Bronze Reseller status, we regularly do Autodesk courses --which require a pass mark of 80%!  Rick recently passed the "Introduction to Autodesk Vehicle Tracking", and found it most interesting. This not the vehicle tracking you might be familiar with, namely tracking stolen vehicles. Rather, it concerns examining, in plan and/or elevation, or in three dimensions, the route that a vehicle would follow over a road, parking area, or contoured terrain.

Part of the overall Autodesk solution for transportation, Autodesk Vehicle Tracking can be divided into three main segments: Vehicle swept path analysis, parking layout and design, and roundabout design. It is an application that loads along with a few of the AutoCAD-based products, most notably Autodesk® AutoCAD Civil 3D.

The program has an extensive Vehicle Library containing vehicles from all over the world, or you can "build" your own.  You pick a vehicle (usually something big, like a pantechnicon or an articulated horse-and-trailer) and then "drive" it through your road design, picking points along the path to drive the vehicle through, and seeing where it drives over sidewalks or into oncoming lanes during turns or reversing.

Vehicles can include aircraft on runways and light rail (trams etc.) running on streets.

One can also create a 3D Animation from several viewpoints: A "fly-by" view, driver's view, or even rear-view mirror view. The illustration shows a frame from an animation of a Dallas Streetcar travelling on the red line.

Contoured 3D Surfaces can be traversed and ground clearance checked. The program can give sightlines of the vehicle when driving. Parking layout and design, and roundabout design, are delightfully sophisticated, yet easy to use.

Next month we might return to the Excel 2016 Desktop edition.

Computius Say:

"Articulated vehicle" must mean word "vehicle" clearly pronounced with silent "h".
