Online Business Tip #15 - The Importance of Regular Backups

The burglary of a laptop and cell phone from our office in the early hours of 15 December impressed on us yet again the importance of backups, preferably off-site backups!  Last year, an acquaintance had a flood and lost both his data and his on-site backups.

There are a number of cloud backup solutions available at various prices. We use IronTree automatically backing up to the Cloud every night from our server.   Contact us to be put in touch with our service providers. With USB flash drives available in sizes from 128GB to 1TB at affordable prices, it is possible to take a snapshot of your hard drive and lodge it with a friend or relative, or in your FNB safety deposit box (!) as a back-backup.

Other new QuickBooks Developments

Because your customer experience has to be of the highest standard, resellers are to be certified. We met the standards set in the exams - one of us for QuickBooks and one for Payroll.  This promises you, as our customer, a reliable and nurturing relationship.

Currently you can buy QuickBooks and Quick Payroll for a whopping 30% discount.

Quick Payroll

Please contact Judith for the new KeyPlayer software and assistance in getting your data file to QuickBooks for conversion.

Green Tip

Please be aware that our rivers are not clean and the water can be toxic if drunk without boiling it. Currently the waste water processing plants are under strain and often release partially processed water into the rivers. The potable water infrastructure is also failing in many areas.  Please report all leaks to your local municipality.

Excel Tip #161 -- What's New in Excel 2016 for Windows? New Statistical Box and Whisker Charts (I)

We are looking at what is new in Excel 2016 for Windows Desktop, compared with Excel 2010.  As we saw in Excel Tip #158, on the Insert ribbon, in the Charts group, the new button for the new Statistical charts produces Box and Whisker charts (and Histogram-type charts).

A box-and-whisker chart gives statistics of a large quantity of data.  It shows the distribution of data rather than individual values. The boxes bracket the first and third quartile values, with line in between for the median. The boxes have lines extending vertically called “whiskers”. These lines run to the maximum (top) and minimum (bottom) values of a group of data.

Box-and-whisker charts are mostly used in statistical analysis. For example, you could use a box and whisker chart to compare medical trial results or students' test scores.

In the diagram on the far right, we have enlarged a single box-and-whisker to show where the different values occur.  Each part of the chart may have a different height, depending on the data.  More next month.
