On-Line Business Tip #24: Google Hacks 2 - Specific Phrase:

Google is the world's most popular search engine. So it helps to know a bit more about using it than the average person.

It is easy to go to www.google.co.za and type in words to search for. Google will then search for pages where all those words occur. Sometimes that is not good enough; instead we want to search for a specific phrase, or make sure that specific words occur on the page.

Say, for example, that we want to find a program to produce soil profiles and borehole logs (like dotPLOT, for example).  You could ask Google to search for soil profile borehole log (without quotes): That will produce about 787 000 results.  However if you search for "soil profile" "borehole log" (with quotes), it finds only about 7 450 more specific results (including dotPLOT).

AutoCAD

There are two useful actions that you can take with renewals. The first is moving from Maintenance Subscription to Annual.

Why is this a good idea?

The US Dollar pricing will be fixed until 2030 - does that sound good?

If you don't choose this option, maintenance renewals will go up by 20% per annum.

The second is looking at two or three year subscriptions when you renew or buy for the first time. This means that you have secured your subscription for those time periods and will save money. This has now been extended until the 29th March

Excel Tip #174 -- Why Learn About Excel Macros?

Now for something completely different.

You're a proficient user of Excel, whether 2016, 2013, or 2010. You know your =SUBTOTAL function from your =SUM, and can write an =IF function in the right order without needing Intellisense. You can do complex operations without help.

However, you find yourself repeating the same operation time and again. Perhaps it happens every month-end.  Or you regularly have CSV files you need to process, maybe deleting unwanted columns, formatting column headings, and saving as an XLSX file.

Now is the time to up your game another level. Stop mindlessly repeating the same operation a dozen times!  Instead, record the operation as a Macro in code, and run that every time, while you get a cup of tea.  You'll save time and your work will be more valuable.

Next time, we'll start gently with the basics of using macros. Join us on this journey!
