Online Business Tip ~ Autodesk Tip ~ Excel Tip ~ Job Hunting Tip
Welcome. The Protection of Personal Information (POPI) Act went live on 1 July. What was the fuss about? Read on...
There's an Excel for Engineers Live Online Training mid-month, facilitated by Rick.
We also have a business tip: Yet another clever scam. Fraudsters are getting cleverer See below...
On the Autodesk front, a massive 30% off on Fusion 360!
We have reached Excel tip #200 our series: A milestone. Finally, words of wisdom or otherwise from Computius.
Microsoft Excel is (pardon the pun) an excellent engineering tool. Not only does it have all basic mathematical functions, it has advanced statistical functions, matrix manipulation, charts, and much else. Are you, as an engineer and scientist, using it to the full? Are you aware of how much it can do? Many of us are self-taught and have gaps in our knowledge. Fill those gaps on the online Excel for Engineers and Scientists training this month: two full days of personal attention in a small class.
Next Course Dates: Thursday 22 and Friday 23 July 2021 (two days).
Venue: Live Online via Zoom.
Regular Price: R4,999 plus VAT each. Special Reader's Price if you reply to this newsletter before Tuesday 20 July: Only R4,599 plus VAT per trainee.
Course Creator and Facilitator: Rick Raubenheimer.

From 30 June we received a deluge of emails from people on whose mailing lists we are, about their POPI Compliance. Here is a Sample:
take your privacy seriously and with the POPI Act coming into effect on
1 July 2021, we would like to ensure that we have your consent to keep
sending email communications to you.
No action is required if you are happy to stay on our mailing list and it will be accepted that you have consented to staying on. If you change your mind at any time in the future, you will always have the option to unsubscribe.
If you wish to be removed from our mailing list, simply unsubscribe by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of this e-mail.
Now, if they had done the Small Business POPI Compliance Course they would have known that their email was completely unnecessary. Recipients on the mailing list have already given consent to receive their email and have already had –or should have had– the opportunity to unsubscribe.
All they probably did was get a pile of unsubscribes from people who were annoyed by the volume of POPIA email.
It's new subscribers from whom they need to get permission.
What about customers? Well, of course customers have given permission to be contacted: What are they going to do, email each one and ask for permission again?
If the customer had wanted to buy cheese graters and the company now wants to sell them ladies' underwear, that's a different story, of course...
Is your company wasting time doing a whole lot of needless work because you don't really know what POPIA compliance requires?
Everyone else is trying to teach people every facet of the act. Small business doesn't need it. You need to get fast compliance, with the least amount of hassle.
Attend the Small Business POPI Compliance Course and you won't make that kind of mistake. For just R3,997 or five monthly payments of R800 you not only get the business owner trained, but Staff Privacy Awareness training for each employee with completion certificate, Free for 15 Employees.

If you have an online business, you might have fallen for this recent phishing scam.
I received the following SMS:
PayFast.:Tap https://bit.ly/3hnPAYFAST to receive payment sent to you via PayFast;Ref:17168;30062021.Call 0213004400.
The link goes to https://payfast-payments-3df531.netlify.app/ where they ask for a PayFast login (I don’t have one, so I gave a fake, which it accepted). Then it wanted banking login details including password, and then –believe it or not– credit card details including a CVV number (to which I supplied fake info, which it accepted). The website then announced "Payment Made".
At no point did it actually say what amount was involved. That was a bit of a give-away. As well, if one looked carefully, that the website address ended in netlify.app, not payfast.co.za. But it was a secured (https:) site, with the standard PayFast branding. So one could be fooled.
Remember that banks and PayFast will never ask for sensitive financial information such as credit card numbers or banking details. Always use your own bookmark to go to PayFast and your bank's site, never click on a link in an email or SMS.

Our two-hundredth Excel Tip! Quite a milestone.
We are busy with our macro to process a list of telephone numbers into a uniform format. In the last issue, we used a single-line IF statement. However, there may be several mutually exclusive possibilities. Hence, a multi-line If may work better. How would you do that?
How about this, using ElseIf?
' If it
starts with "27" (or your country code), replace that with a "0":
If Left$(Tel$, 2) = "27" Then ' Int dial
Tel$ = "0" & Mid(Tel$, 3)
ElseIf Left$(Tel$, 3) = "+27" Then ' Int dial
Tel$ = "0" & Mid(Tel$, 4)
ElseIf Left$(Tel$, 1) <> "0" Then
Tel$ = "0" & Tel$
We will look at the rest of the macro in our next instalment.
You can use this time to learn simple Excel macros. Do repetitive work in a flash, instead of repeating the same boring stuff manually. Save hours not working late, and spend more time with your family... The Software Africa Quick 'n Easy Turbo-Start Excel Macros course is now online. The lockdown, discount has ended, but it is still a bargain.
