If you are an AutoCAD user with a renewal coming up, please be aware of impending price increases, one as soon as tomorrow at 16:00. Renew early and beat the price increase. But hurry! You have only a few hours!
Longer-term, another increase looms in early January.
Below are the usual business computer tip and Excel tip. Feel free to write and tell us yours (questions, or answers).
Have a great November!
Since our last price decrease on 27 September 2024, our suppliers have seen a depreciation of the South African Rand against the US Dollar.
To cater for this, we have received notification of a price increase of 5.3% as of close of business 19 November 2024.
If you would like to take advantage of current pricing, we will need to receive payment by 16:00 on Tuesday 19 November 2024. Please contact us urgently for this.
Autodesk says there will be a Suggested Retail Price increase in South Africa on 7 January 2025. These changes are:
Multi-year subscriptions will continue to receive a renewal discount of 5% over the new seat pricing, but Annual subscriptions will now cost the same as a new seat. Hence, if you do not renew on time, you might as well rather buy a new package and score the days for which you were unable to use your package. Autodesk's logic in this escapes us, as do many of the doings of Autodesk.
There will also be a biennial (once every two years) M2S price increase of around 5% expected on 7 May 2025.

For no apparent reason, my Samsung Galaxy A71 smartphone, running on Android, stopped automatically adding a space after words I choose from predictive text choices in the text editor. This text editor is used for most applications that use text: WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS, and many more. Having to hit the space bar after each word was a major annoyance. Mostly I would end up with the words runtogetherlikethis.
Samsung Help came through with this advice, which changed the appearance a bit, but did solve the problem:
Go to Settings > General Management > Keyboard list and default > Samsung Keyboard. Scroll down to "Reset to default settings". Under that, click "Reset keyboard settings".
They also suggested (but I didn't need): You may need to perform a Soft Reset on your device, which will reset all the General settings on your device. You won't lose any data stored. To do this, hold your power button and volume down button together at the same time for 10-15 seconds. Then confirm.
The Excel for Engineers course is on our online platform, systeme.io. It has video in most lessons, This is the most complete one we have produced. There are extra sample files and material we don't have time for on the regular two-day live course.
Why should you take the Excel for Engineers course?
The course is chock-full of benefits for any Excel user in a technical field. Using 19 pre-built spreadsheets (yours to keep), we comprehensively cover using Excel as an Engineering and Scientific Tool.
Do it at your own pace at times that suit you. Take half an hour a day and complete it in a month. Spend an hour a day and finish it in two weeks. Or dedicate two days –a weekend, perhaps?– and crack the whole course. Then revise until your memory is solid.

The customer had a spreadsheet where various issues were rated by severity as H (High), M (Medium), or L (Low) They wanted a pie chart where the number of issues at each level could be displayed. The relevant part of the spreadsheet looked like this:
The background colours were done with conditional formatting, which we will not address now.
To get a count of each letter, we use the COUNTIF function, thus: =COUNTIF(range, value) where range is the cells in column B containing the issue ratings, and value is H, M, or L. The results can then be charted, thus:
