On-Line Business Tip #82 – Cleanup Your Hard Drive to Recover Space

Is your computer's hard drive running out of space?  Don't want to buy a new drive?  Try this from time to time: Use Disk Cleanup.

  1. Press the Win+E keys to open File Explorer.
  2. Right-click on the hard drive you want to clean (e.g. C:).
  3. On the pop-up menu, click Properties.
  4. Click the button Disk Cleanup and wait while it calculates.
  5. The Disk Cleanup dialog box will appear.  Tick the items you want to delete.  Clearing the Recycle Bin will mean you can no longer undelete those items.
  6. Click OK and wait for several minutes, even hours, while the cleanup takes place.

No Price Increase on Autodesk this Month

What a relief to have a boring headline for a change.  Thinking of "boring", a newspaper once had an internal competition for the most boring headline, and came up with "Small earthquake in Chile; not many dead".

Please email us at Software Africa if you need a quote on your renewal.

Excel Tip #229 – The CONVERT Function

A short Excel tip this month, to balance the long items above.

Do you ever need to convert between different measurement systems?  It's more of a problem in  the US, where they stubbornly cling to archaic units in the face of the rest of the world metricating, inflicting on us units like gallons, feet and inches.  What are they talking about?  Never stress, though, Excel can help.  The CONVERT Function can do a large number of conversions for you.  For example:

Description Value Formula
1 mile in km 1.609344 =CONVERT(1,"mi","km")
1 mile in metres 1609.344 =CONVERT(1,"mi","m")
1 pint in litres        0.473 =CONVERT(1,"pt","l")
1 cup in litres        0.237 =CONVERT(1,"cup","l")
1 ounce mass in grams      28.350 =CONVERT(1,"ozm","g")
1 International acre in ha      0.4047 =CONVERT(1,"uk_acre","ha")
1 parsec in light-years      3.2616 =CONVERT(1,"parsec","ly")
1 parsec in km 3.086E+13 =CONVERT(1,"parsec","km")

To see the full list of abbreviations (some of which will show up as you type the formula), visit this page of Microsoft Help.  That page is also interesting for the list of unit prefixes near the end, like yotta (10^24), zetta (10^21), femto, atto, and zepto!

Next time: Another new topic, in a femtosecond or two.

Use the Holidays well by Learning a Timesaving New Skill:

Why not do the Excel Macros online course before the year is much older?  Learn to do repetitive work in a flash, instead of repeating the same boring stuff by hand.  Save hours not working late, and spend more time with your family...  The Software Africa Quick 'n Easy Turbo-Start Excel Macros course is online.  Take it now before the price goes up.
